When the Kenyan flag rises in Brampton, it represents more than a national symbol thousands of kilometres from home.

It represents belonging.

That message was particularly visible during the 2025 Kenya Independence Day celebration in Brampton, when Mayor Patrick Brown joined members of the Kenyan community, diplomatic representatives, community leaders and invited guests for the Independence Day and flag raising ceremony.

The gathering at Brampton City Hall provided a meaningful setting for Kenya’s national celebration to be recognised within one of Canada’s most diverse cities.

Mayor Brown’s participation was one of the significant moments of the day.

Published coverage from the ceremony shows the Mayor addressing attendees and joining Kenya’s High Commissioner to Canada, H.E. Ambassador Carolyne Kamende Daudi, and other dignitaries during the celebration. He also presented a gift to the High Commissioner as part of the occasion.

The Mayor’s remarks added an important civic dimension to the celebration.

For diaspora communities, recognition from the city where they live matters. It signals that heritage does not have to disappear when someone builds a life in another country.

Brampton’s public celebrations and flag-raising traditions provide communities with an opportunity to share important moments of identity and history within the wider city.

For Kenyans gathered in 2025, the Mayor’s presence reinforced that Kenya’s Independence Day could be celebrated proudly not only as a Kenyan occasion, but as part of Brampton’s multicultural civic life.

The City of Brampton has repeatedly described its diverse communities as central to the city’s identity, while Mayor Brown has publicly highlighted community service, cultural contribution and leadership as important parts of Brampton’s strength.

The significance of the Mayor’s participation also extends beyond ceremony.

Brampton is becoming an important meeting point for diaspora-led conversations involving business, community development, culture and international relationships.

That makes municipal engagement increasingly relevant to the direction of the Kenya–Canada Trade, Tourism & Diaspora Forum.

The Forum is growing beyond a single celebration.

Its 2026 edition will bring together government representatives, business leaders, investors, entrepreneurs, tourism stakeholders, community organizations and members of the Kenyan and African diaspora to explore opportunities connecting Kenya and Canada.

The conversations will include trade, investment, tourism, entrepreneurship, diaspora investment, financial services, youth and women’s economic participation, business connections and strategic partnerships.

The relationship between a city and its diaspora communities can help create the environment in which these connections grow.

Kenya celebrates Jamhuri Day on December 12, marking the country’s independence and republic.

For Kenyans living abroad, the occasion takes on an additional layer of meaning. It becomes a moment to remember home while also celebrating the community being built in a new country.

In 2025, the Brampton celebration included the presence of Kenyan diplomatic and community leadership alongside municipal representatives. Coverage from the occasion also documented Mayor Brown taking part in the ceremonial cutting of the Independence celebration cake with Ambassador Kamende Daudi and other dignitaries.

These moments matter because diplomacy is not conducted only between national governments.

Relationships between people, communities, cities, businesses and institutions also contribute to stronger international connections.

That relationship continues this year.

Mayor Patrick Brown is set to be present again as the Kenyan community returns for the 3rd Kenya–Canada Trade, Tourism & Diaspora Forum 2026, taking place from December 11–13 in Brampton.

The Forum will include three major components:

the Trade, Tourism & Diaspora Forum, the Kenya Independence Flag Raising Ceremony, and the Diaspora Recognition & Awards.

The Kenya Independence ceremony will once again take place at Ken Whillans Square, with the official raising of the Kenyan national flag, the Kenyan and Canadian national anthems, community and government remarks, cultural expression and opportunities for the community to celebrate together.

The 2026 flag raising is being organized by Yes Youth and Women Can (YYWC) in collaboration with the Kenyan community and with support from the City of Brampton Events & Protocol Office.

The Mayor’s return also reflects the wider direction of this year’s Forum.

The event is intentionally moving from celebration to connection, and from connection to opportunity and impact.

Kenya’s heritage remains central.

So does community.

But the 2026 Forum will also create room for conversations that can lead to business partnerships, investment, tourism promotion, diaspora engagement and new relationships between Canadian and Kenyan stakeholders.

That combination makes Brampton an appropriate home for the Forum.

A city shaped by migration and entrepreneurship can also become a place where diaspora communities help create new economic and cultural bridges with their countries of origin.

The Kenyan flag will rise again.

Community members will gather again.

Leaders will speak.

Outstanding members of the diaspora will be recognised.

Businesses and institutions will meet.

And new conversations will begin.

Following a memorable 2025 celebration, the 3rd Kenya–Canada Trade, Tourism & Diaspora Forum 2026 will build on that momentum with an expanded three-day program focused on trade, tourism, diaspora engagement, independence and recognition.

December 11–13, 2026 | Brampton, Ontario, Canada

Register to attend • Become a Sponsor • Nominate an Awardee

When the Kenyan flag rises in Brampton, it represents more than a national symbol thousands of kilometres from home.
