About the Event

Swahili Heritage Festival 2025: A Celebration of Culture and Community

Ontario is home to a significant number of Swahili-speaking communities from various countries across Africa and beyond. These include individuals from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Somalia, Comoros, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and South Sudan. Additionally, Swahili is spoken and understood by Indian and Arab communities with historical ties to the Swahili coast, including those from Oman, Yemen, and Gujarat, India. Many Swahili speakers in Ontario have settled in cities like Brampton, Toronto, Ottawa, and London, contributing to the province’s multicultural fabric. Their presence has enriched the local economy, arts, and cultural heritage, making the Swahili Heritage Festival an essential event to celebrate this diverse and dynamic community.

A Historic Milestone: Swahili Heritage Month Proclaimed in Brampton

On February 19, 2025, Swahili Heritage Festival founder Mariam Adams and Deputy Executive Director Latifat addressed the Brampton Committee of Council Correspondence, including Mayor Patrick Brown. As a result, Mayor Patrick Brown officially proclaimed July as Swahili Heritage Month in Brampton!

This historic recognition acknowledges the cultural and economic contributions of Swahili-speaking communities in Canada and beyond. It also solidifies the Swahili Heritage Festival as a key cultural event in Canada, fostering cross-cultural understanding and providing greater opportunities for community members to celebrate and preserve their heritage.
